I’ve always been fascinated with how things came to be…which may explain my choice to double major in History on a whim, even though I was 2/3 through my English major requirements.
I like knowing the backstory behind the backstory; the stories that shaped the story we’ve come to know and accept as truth today.
That could explain my obsession with psychology and meaning-making; I’ve always been in search of the why that could explain a behavior, a response, a state of affairs.
Family stories and family histories have always been a huge thing for me personally; they’re one of the first ways I like to observe and get to know new people.
For Inheritances, I plan to explore the ideas, mores, norms, beliefs, habits, and behaviors we inherit and perpetuate down the family line. For logistical ease, I’ll start with my own inheritances, but the plan is to interview people who can also share what they learned and what they’re now teaching about everything from love and friendship to money and career ambition.
The overarching theme is, what message did you get about [insert topic] and how did that shape your current approach? Will you stick to what you were taught and teach that to the next generation? Or will you flip the script?
If you’re interested in sharing your own inheritances, hit me up. I’d love to interview you or otherwise feature your story.
Let’s see how this goes…
